‘Torrid Humiliation’, Dr Rosalind Ranson – What you need to know

Rosalind ranson - intelligence & risk solutions

Dr Rosalind Ranson was recently awarded over £3,000,000, as reported by ITV, in compensation for being unfairly dismissed in 2022, she had held her position as medical director at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) from 2019 until January 2022.

The tribunal found that she had been “made to feel not wanted” before she was sacked from her position. Dr Ranson raised a number of concerns between April 2020 and March 2021 regarding concerns over patient safety, and failures by the governing in the DHSC to pass on advice to government ministers to shut the borders sooner.

She had warned about flaws in data and modelling on which decisions regarding covid had been based, Dr Ranson had told the British Medical Association that if her advice “had been heeded earlier, more lives would have been saved”.

The Employment and Equality tribunal report said Kathryn Magson, the DHSC Chief Executive, had become “frustrated and irritated” with Dr Ranson’s challenges, leading her to be undermined and excluded.

Dr Ranson was then not moved into Manx Care in April 2021, and was instead left in an “empty shell role” in the DHSC, it added.

The tribunal found that Dr Ranson had “endured a period of torrid humiliation with stoic dignity”.

Dr Ranson stated that: “The tribunal’s decision is not just a victory for me, it is also a victory for the principle of whistleblowing and for doctors having the freedom and independence to speak the truth.”

Public whistleblowing, as shown, has its consequences – luckily it was resolved this time however that is not always the case. Fortunately; our software Aranea can help.

Aranea is a completely anonymous and encrypted whistleblowing platform, we can raise concerns with your employer on your behalf or escalate the situation to the public if needs be, completely anonymously for you.
